Publisher’ Commentary: With over a million copies in print, Evidence That Demands a Verdict is a classic defense of Christian belief. It will stimulate and challenge the non-believer. And it will give every Christian an unshakable foundation for life and faith.

Bookshop Summary:  A fair start for the new Christian, but a waste of time for the knowledgable one. You’d do better picking up McDowell’s He Walked Among Us if you can find it.

A review of Josh McDowell’s

Obviously, it is nearly obligatory for me to do this one. But fans of Josh McDowell may wish that I hadn’t.

Yes, despite that fact that I have spent years defending the basics behind this material, the book itself is something I really can’t recommend for anyone except the most neophyte apologist - and once you DO get it, I strongly suggest you do further study before going walking out armed with ETDAV in your holster. In other words, as I’ve said elsewhere, when using ETDAV, follow the instructions.

I have a few big problems with this book. My main beef is that it needs to be updated badly. This material, compiled in the early 70s, has been superseded by much better and more up-to-date matrerial in many cases. You’d do better to begin with McDowell’s more recent book, He Walked Among Us – in fact, I’d review it right now if it was available! You can’t get it from Amazon at the moment, unless you want to wait 5-6 months for a used copy. Maybe someday the nice folks at Thomas Nelson will get the message, print more copies of HWAU.

That’s the beef that really bends the BBQ grill, but I’ve got a couple of others as well. In many places things aren’t explained well enough, and the relevance of the information given is not established. In other places quoted material does not really provide “evidence” at all – it is just some expert getting excited and asserting himself. Quotes like that do not belong with the others. And of course, this thing will not be much help to you facing today’s skeptics.

In short, feel free to buy this if you want a general outline of where to start your career in apologetics. But don’t cling to it like a security blanket or you’ll end up trampled. Get past the milk, and look for some solid food.
