Case Studies

On Replies to "The Case for Faith" and "The Case for the Real Jesus"
James Patrick Holding

Not too long ago, I engaged friendly Skeptic Kyle Gerkin on the subject of Lee Strobel's Case for Faith. At that time the Secular Web also hosted a shorter, much more succinct critique of CAF that I chose not to address. The author of that material, Paul Jacobsen, wrote me a polite letter or so asking if I planned to speak to his response as well. Given my time limitations at that date, and the shortness of his reply, I declined at that time.

Whether this had anything to do with what came about later, I cannot say, but it remains that Jacobsen eventually published a full-length response to CAF which a reader has brought to my attention. As Strobel's self-appointed bulldog, I took it on, and replies (updated to reflect Jacobsen's 2006 edition, though I have left all older material intact, and have not updated with new quotes if I find that Jacobsen's arguments are nothing new not answered in my replies) ae below.

I will now also be working on replies to Jacobsen's take on Case for the Real Jesus below. (He also has a reply to The Case for a Creator, but that is outside my subject purview.)

Case for Faith

  • Comments on Paul's Copan's That's Just Your Interpretation

I had invited Jacobnsen to debate me on TWeb, and he did here. Regrettably, Jacobsen quickly found himself out of his league with TWeb opponents and latched onto an excuse to leave related to my alleged poor treatment of a particularly despicable TWeb Skeptic whom he admitted he knew nothing about, but stood behind anyway. I think it sums up Jacobsen's epistemology well to say that he's good at taking stands for things without having adequate knowledge.
