A Plea to "Pop Christianity" by "Anaxios"
To the saints of the Lord Jesus Christ living in the midst of a faithless and perverse generation,
The church is in a famine. It is one thing to have to deal with the persistent existence of heresies like that of the Valentinians, the Arians, and the Socinians of old, or their modern counterparts like the Gnostic Church, the Jehovah's Witnesses, and the open theists, yet even to the one who cannot discern his right hand from his left, the error in these ways is readily manifest. However, in these last days, countless lies have arisen and crept in, anything from the subversive, like higher criticism, "health and wealth" charismatics, and evangelical feminism, to the merely misguided, such as dispensationalism, historical evidentialism, and revivalism. More and more, the truth of God is being changed into a lie, and even other believers no longer have the basic sense of that upon which the new life is based. Read Acts, and consider whether the apostles would recognize, given our current state, the church here; or Leviticus, and whether it echoes our modern religion; or Jude, and whether we would accept him as one of our own, or a fanatic.
Here, I present fifteen truths that the church today ought to remember from its former days. There is no extra commentary presented, simply a title and six verses per each, because Scripture is its own best interpreter. Such must not be limited only to these pages, but this is milk, not strong meat, which is more needful for this present time; and when these are finally digested, abound more and more. Pass this along to every saint in Christ Jesus, for the sake of the faith once delivered. I pray that professing believers everywhere will repent, lest Christ take away our candlestick, for it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not?
Your fellow servant,
Soli Deo Gloria
The essential attribute of God is holiness, not love.
And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.
1 Samuel 2:2
There is none holy as the LORD: for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our God.
The LORD is righteous in all his ways, and holy in all his works.
Be silent, O all flesh, before the LORD: for he is raised up out of his holy habitation.
Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; and declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead.
And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.
We chose God because He chose us, not the other way around.
Blessed is the man whom thou choosest, and causest to approach unto thee, that he may dwell in thy courts: we shall be satisfied with the goodness of thy house, even of thy holy temple.
For Jacob my servant's sake, and Israel mine elect, I have even called thee by thy name: I have surnamed thee, though thou hast not known me.
For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the LORD our God shall call.
2 Corinthians 4:6
For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: according as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.
And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.
Doctrine is the foundation of our faith, not useless head knowledge.
But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
1 Timothy 4:13
Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.
1 Timothy 4:16
Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee.
2 Timothy 4:2
Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine.
But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine.
2 John 1:10
If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed.
Saving faith is obedient loyalty to Christ, not mere belief.
Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him.
Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.
These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.
Knowledge is the starting point of faith, not its opponent.
Also, that the soul be without knowledge, it is not good; and he that hasteth with his feet sinneth.
Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.
And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen: to whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.
Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved. For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.
For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins.
Christianity is primarily a corporate relationship, not a personal one.
But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ.
This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better: nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you.
1 Peter 2:9
But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.
Worship must be regulated by Scripture, not sensational and unrestrained.
And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the LORD, which he commanded them not. And there went out fire from the LORD, and devoured them, and they died before the LORD. Then Moses said unto Aaron, This is it that the LORD spake, saying, I will be sanctified in them that come nigh me, and before all the people I will be glorified. And Aaron held his peace.
Isaiah 29:13, 24
Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men... They also that erred in spirit shall come to understanding, and they that murmured shall learn doctrine.
God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
1 Corinthians 14:40
Let all things be done decently and in order.
Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body: not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
God hates the sinners, not just their sins.
And ye shall not walk in the manners of the nations which I cast out before you: for they committed all these things, and therefore I abhorred them.
The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: thou hatest all workers of iniquity.
Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD: though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished.
All their wickedness is in Gilgal: for there I hated them: for the wickedness of their doings I will drive them out of mine house, I will love them no more: all their princes are revolters.
What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction: and that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory, even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?
The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb.
Love is the willful action of attachment, not a mental state.
And his soul clave unto Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the damsel, and spake kindly unto the damsel.
And it shall be, if he say unto thee, I will not go away from thee; because he loveth thee and thine house, because he is well with thee; then thou shalt take an aul, and thrust it through his ear unto the door, and he shall be thy servant for ever. And also unto thy maidservant thou shalt do likewise.
Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee.
1 Kings 11:2
Of the nations concerning which the LORD said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in unto you: for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods: Solomon clave unto these in love.
No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.
Rebuking demonstrates love in the truth, not spiteful bigotry.
Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thine heart: thou shalt in any wise rebuke thy neighbour, and not suffer sin upon him.
He that saith unto the wicked, Thou are righteous; him shall the people curse, nations shall abhor him: but to them that rebuke him shall be delight, and a good blessing shall come upon them.
Open rebuke is better than secret love.
It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.
Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him.
As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.
True evangelism involves real preaching, not just a living testimony.
Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.
And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick.
But when divers were hardened, and believed not, but spake evil of that way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus. And this continued by the space of two years; so that all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!
1 Corinthians 9:16
For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!
In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began; but hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour.
The gospel call demands that all repent, not merely love.
But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
And Jesus answering said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the Galilaeans, because they suffered such things? I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem? I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?
Those that ultimately reject must be condemned, not evangelistically coaxed.
1 Samuel 15:23

And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted to heaven, shalt be thrust down to hell.
He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
Passing God's judgment is a righteous act, not an hateful one.
And in controversy they shall stand in judgment; and they shall judge it according to my judgments: and they shall keep my laws and my statutes in all mine assemblies; and they shall hallow my sabbaths.
Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.
Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.
And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us.
1 Corinthians 2:15
But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.
A man that is an heretick after the first and second admonition reject; knowing that he that is such is subverted, and sinneth, being condemned of himself.
Salvation is a sanctifying progression, not just the moment of justification.
Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy: for I am the LORD your God.
For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.
Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
1 Thessalonians 4:7
For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.
For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.
Hebrews 12:1-2, 14
Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us... Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.
