A. God
ordained the authority of the prophets and the apostles.
And Aaron spoke all the words which the LORD had spoken to Moses. Then
he did
the signs in the sight
of the people.
So you shall put them on Aaron your brother and on his sons with him.
You shall
anoint them, consecrate them, and sanctify them, that they may
minister
to Me as priests.
And you shall take the anointing oil, pour it on his head, and anoint
him.
And you shall take some of the blood that is on the altar, and some of
the anointing
oil, and sprinkle it on Aaron and on his garments, on his sons and on
the
garments of his sons with him; and he and his garments shall be
hallowed, and
his sons and his sons’ garments with him.
“And the holy garments of Aaron shall be his sons’ after him, to be anointed
in them and to be consecrated in them.
And you shall anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them,
that they
may minister to Me as priests.
Exodus
40:13
You shall put the holy garments on Aaron, and anoint him and
consecrate
him, that he may minister to Me as priest.
You shall anoint them, as you anointed their father,
that they
may minister to Me as priests; for their anointing shall surely
be an
everlasting priesthood throughout their generations.”
You shall not add to the word which I command you,
nor take
from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD
your
God which I command you.
I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among their
brethren,
and will put My words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that
I command
Him.
Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on his head, and kissed
him and
said: “Is it not because the LORD has anointed you commander

2And Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will
kill me.”
But the LORD said, “Take a heifer with you, and say, “I have come to
sacrifice
to the LORD.’ 3Then invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I
will show
you what you shall do; you shall anoint for Me the one I name to you.”
4So Samuel did what the LORD said, and went to
5And he said, “Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the
LORD.
Sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.” Then he
consecrated
Jesse and his sons, and invited them to the sacrifice.
6So it was, when they came, that he looked at Eliab and
said, “Surely
the LORD’s anointed is before Him!”
7But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance
or at
his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the LORD does not
see as
man sees; [Septuagint reads For God
does not
see as man sees; Targum reads It is not by the appearance of a
man;
Vulgate reads Nor do I judge according to the looks of a man]
for
man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”
8So Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel.
And he
said, “Neither has the LORD chosen this one.” 9Then Jesse
made
Shammah pass by. And he said, “Neither has the LORD chosen this one.”
10Thus
Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to
Jesse, “The
LORD has not chosen these.” 11And Samuel said to Jesse, “Are
all the
young men here?” Then he said, “There remains yet the youngest, and
there he
is, keeping the sheep.”
And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and bring him. For we will not sit down [Following Septuagint and Vulgate;
Masoretic Text
reads turn around; Targum and Syriac read turn away]
till he
comes here.” 12So he sent and brought him in. Now he was
ruddy, with
bright eyes, and good-looking. And the LORD said, “Arise,
anoint him; for this is the one!” 13Then Samuel
took the horn of oil and anointed
him in the midst of his brothers; and the
Spirit of the LORD came upon David from
that day forward. So Samuel arose and went to Ramah.
Then Saul sent messengers to take David. And when they saw the group
of prophets
prophesying, and Samuel standing
as leader over them, the Spirit of
God came upon the messengers
of Saul, and they also
prophesied.
Look, this day your eyes have seen that the LORD delivered you today
into my
hand in the cave, and someone urged me to kill you. But my eye spared
you, and
I said, “I will not stretch out my hand against my lord, for he is the
LORD’s anointed.’
But David said to Abishai, “Do not destroy him; for who can stretch out
his
hand against the LORD’s anointed, and be guiltless?”
The LORD forbid that I should stretch out my hand against the LORD’s anointed.
But please, take now the spear and the jug of water that are by his
head, and
let us go.”
Then Nathan said to David, “You are the man! Thus says the LORD God of

has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to

“Before I formed you in the womb
I knew you; Before you
were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet
to the nations.”
Since the day that your fathers came out of the land of Egypt until
this day, I
have even sent to you all My servants the prophets,
daily
rising up early and sending them.
1 In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came from the LORD, saying, 2”Thus says the LORD: “Stand in the court of the LORD’s house, and speak to all the cities of Judah, which come to worship in the LORD’s house, all the words that I command you to speak to them. Do not diminish a word.

whom I sent
to you, both rising up early and sending them (but you have not heeded),
I have also sent to you all My servants the prophets,
rising up early and sending them, saying, “Turn now everyone from his
evil way,
amend your doings, and do not go after other gods to serve them; then
you will
dwell in the land which I have given you and your fathers.’ But you
have not
inclined your ear, nor obeyed Me.
Jeremiah

However I have sent to you all My servants the prophets,
rising early and sending them, saying, “Oh, do not do this abominable
thing
that I hate!”
Thus says the Lord GOD: “Are you he of whom I have spoken in former
days by My

I have also spoken by the prophets, And have multiplied
visions; I have
given symbols through the witness of the prophets.”
Yet surely My words and My statutes, Which I commanded My
servants

returned and
said: “Just as the LORD of hosts determined to do to us, According to
our ways
and according to our deeds, So He has dealt with us.”
6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe. 8He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

Jesus confirmed authority to the prophets and the apostles.
