IV. Legal Confirmation.

A.      The truthfulness of the testimony of the prophets and the apostles were confirmed by other prophets and apostles.

Daniel 9:10
We have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God, to walk in His laws, which He set before us by His servants the prophets.

Zechariah 7:12
Yes, they made their hearts like flint, refusing to hear the law and the words which the LORD of hosts had sent by His Spirit through the former prophets. Thus great wrath came from the LORD of hosts.

Acts 17:10-12

10 Then the brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea. When they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews. 11These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so. 12Therefore many of them believed, and also not a few of the Greeks, prominent women as well as men.

2 Peter 3:14-16

14 Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless; 15and consider that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation--as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you, 16as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures.

B. Prophets confirmed Mosaic authorship of the Law.

Throughout the Bible the prophets attest to Moses’ authorship of the Law.

Exodus 17:14
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Write this for a memorial in the book and recount it in the hearing of Joshua, that I will utterly blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.”

Numbers 33:1-2
1 These are the journeys of the children of Israel, who went out of the land of Egypt by their armies under the hand of Moses and Aaron. 2Now Moses wrote down the starting points of their journeys at the command of the LORD. And these are their journeys according to their starting points:

Deuteronomy 1:1
These are the words which Moses spoke to all Israel on this side of the Jordan in the wilderness, in the plain[Hebrew arabah] opposite Suph, [One manuscript of the Septuagint, also Targum and Vulgate, read Red Sea] between Paran, Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth, and Dizahab.

Joshua 1:7
Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go.

Joshua 23:6
Therefore be very courageous to keep and to do all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, lest you turn aside from it to the right hand or to the left,

1 Kings 2:3
And keep the charge of the LORD your God: to walk in His ways, to keep His statutes, His commandments, His judgments, and His testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn;

2 Kings 14:6
But the children of the murderers he did not execute, according to what is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, in which the LORD commanded, saying, “Fathers shall not be put to death for their children, nor shall children be put to death for their fathers; but a person shall be put to death for his own sin.” [Deuteronomy 24:16]

Deuteronomy 24:16

16”Fathers shall not be put to death for their children, nor shall children be put to death for their fathers; a person shall be put to death for his own sin.

2 Kings 23:25
Now before him there was no king like him, who turned to the LORD with all his heart, with all his soul, and with all his might, according to all the Law of Moses; nor after him did any arise like him.

2 Chronicles 29:25
And he stationed the Levites in the house of the LORD with cymbals, with stringed instruments, and with harps, according to the commandment of David, of Gad the king’s seer, and of Nathan the prophet; for thus was the commandment of the LORD by His prophets.

2 Chronicles 34:14
Now when they brought out the money that was brought into the house of the LORD, Hilkiah the priest found the Book of the Law of the LORD given by Moses.

Ezra 6:18
They assigned the priests to their divisions and the Levites to their divisions, over the service of God in Jerusalem, as it is written in the Book of Moses.

Nehemiah 9:14
You made known to them Your holy Sabbath, And commanded them precepts, statutes and laws, By the hand of Moses Your servant.

Nehemiah 13:1
On that day they read from the Book of Moses in the hearing of the people, and in it was found written that no Ammonite or Moabite should ever come into the assembly of God,

Daniel 9:10-12

10We have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God, to walk in His laws, which He set before us by His servants the prophets. 11Yes, all Israel has transgressed Your law, and has departed so as not to obey Your voice; therefore the curse and the oath written in the Law of Moses the servant of God have been poured out on us, because we have sinned against Him. 12And He has confirmed His words, which He spoke against us and against our judges who judged us, by bringing upon us a great disaster; for under the whole heaven such has never been done as what has been done to Jerusalem.

Daniel 9:13
As it is written in the Law of Moses, all this disaster has come upon us; yet we have not made our prayer before the LORD our God, that we might turn from our iniquities and understand Your truth.

Malachi 4:4
“Remember the Law of Moses, My servant, Which I commanded him in Horeb for all Israel, With the statutes and judgments.

John 1:17
For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that “by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.’ [Deuteronomy 19:15]

John 8:17
It is also written in your law that the testimony of two men is true.

Matthew 26:55-56

55In that hour Jesus said to the multitudes, “Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to take Me? I sat daily with you, teaching in the temple, and you did not seize Me. 56But all this was done that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.”
Then all the disciples forsook Him and fled.

Mark 14:43-50

43 And immediately, while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, with a great multitude with swords and clubs, came from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. 44Now His betrayer had given them a signal, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the One; seize Him and lead Him away safely.”
45As soon as he had come, immediately he went up to Him and said to Him, “Rabbi, Rabbi!” and kissed Him.
46Then they laid their hands on Him and took Him. 47And one of those who stood by drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.
48Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to take Me? 49I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize Me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”
50Then they all forsook Him and fled.

Luke 2:22-24

22 Now when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were completed, they brought Him to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord 23(as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every male who opens the womb shall be called holy to the LORD”), [Exodus 13:2, 12-15] 24and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the law of the Lord, “A pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.” [Leviticus 12:8]

Exodus 13
2”Consecrate to Me all the firstborn, whatever opens the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and beast; it is Mine.”

Exodus 13
12that you shall set apart to the LORD all that open the womb, that is, every firstborn that comes from an animal which you have; the males shall be the LORD’s. 13But every firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb; and if you will not redeem it, then you shall break its neck. And all the firstborn of man among your sons you shall redeem. 14So it shall be, when your son asks you in time to come, saying, “What is this?’ that you shall say to him, “By strength of hand the LORD brought us out of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 15And it came to pass, when Pharaoh was stubborn about letting us go, that the LORD killed all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both the firstborn of man and the firstborn of beast. Therefore I sacrifice to the LORD all males that open the womb, but all the firstborn of my sons I redeem.’

Leviticus 12
8”And if she is not able to bring a lamb, then she may bring two turtledoves or two young pigeons--one as a burnt offering and the other as a sin offering. So the priest shall make atonement for her, and she will be clean.”‘

Romans 2:14-16
14for when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do the things in the law, these, although not having the law, are a law to themselves, 15who show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and between themselves their thoughts accusing or else excusing them) 16in the day when God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel.

But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets,

Romans 4:3

For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” [Genesis 15:6]

Genesis 15

6And he believed in the LORD, and He accounted it to him for righteousness.

Romans 4:17

        3But Esau I have hated,
And laid waste his mountains and his heritage
For the jackals of the wilderness.”

1 I say then, has God cast away His people? Certainly not! For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. 2God has not cast away His people whom He foreknew. 1 Kings 19

Commentary by J.P. Holding: http://www.tektonics.org/af/abekids.html

Genesis 16
15So Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram named his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.

Galatians 4:27
For it is written: “Rejoice, O barren, You who do not bear! Break forth and shout, You who are not in labor! For the desolate has many more children Than she who has a husband.” [Isaiah 54:1]

Isaiah 54
1 “Sing, O barren,
        You who have not borne!
Break forth into singing, and cry aloud,
You who have not labored with child!
For more are the children of the desolate
Than the children of the married woman,” says the LORD.

Galatians 4:30
Nevertheless what does the Scripture say? “Cast out the bondwoman and her son, for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.” [Genesis 21:10]

        Speak each man the truth to his neighbor;
        Give judgment in your gates for truth, justice, and peace;

1 Timothy 5:17-19
17 Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine.  18For the Scripture says, “You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain,”[Deuteronomy 25:4] and, “The laborer is worthy of his wages.”[Luke 10:7] 19Do not receive an accusation against an elder except from two or three witnesses.

Deuteronomy 19
15 “One witness shall not rise against a man concerning any iniquity or any sin that he commits; by the mouth of two or three witnesses the matter shall be established.

2 Timothy 3:14-16
14But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, 15and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
16All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,

If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” [Leviticus 19:18] you do well;

2 Peter 3:15-17

15and consider that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation--as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you, 16as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures.
17You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked;

D. The Rulers of the People and the Synagogue confirmed the Law and the Prophets

Deuteronomy 31:9-13

9 So Moses wrote this law and delivered it to the priests, the sons of Levi, who bore the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and to all the elders of Israel. 10And Moses commanded them, saying: “At the end of every seven years, at the appointed time in the year of release, at the Feast of Tabernacles, 11when all Israel comes to appear before the LORD your God in the place which He chooses, you shall read this law before all Israel in their hearing. 12Gather the people together, men and women and little ones, and the stranger who is within your gates, that they may hear and that they may learn to fear the LORD your God and carefully observe all the words of this law, 13and that their children, who have not known it, may hear and learn to fear the LORD your God as long as you live in the land which you cross the Jordan to possess.”

Joshua 8:33-35
33Then all Israel, with their elders and officers and judges, stood on either side of the ark before the priests, the Levites, who bore the ark of the covenant of the LORD, the stranger as well as he who was born among them. Half of them were in front of Mount Gerizim and half of them in front of Mount Ebal, as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded before, that they should bless the people of Israel. 34And afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessings and the cursings, according to all that is written in the Book of the Law. 35There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded which Joshua did not read before all the assembly of Israel, with the women, the little ones, and the strangers who were living among them.

Nehemiah 8:1-7

1 Now all the people gathered together as one man in the open square that was in front of the Water Gate; and they told Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses, which the LORD had commanded Israel. 2So Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly of men and women and all who could hear with understanding on the first day of the seventh month. 3Then he read from it in the open square that was in front of the Water Gate from morning until midday, before the men and women and those who could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive to the Book of the Law.
4So Ezra the scribe stood on a platform of wood which they had made for the purpose; and beside him, at his right hand, stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Urijah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah; and at his left hand Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hashbadana, Zechariah, and Meshullam. 5And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was standing above all the people; and when he opened it, all the people stood up. 6And Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God.
Then all the people answered, “Amen, Amen!” while lifting up their hands. And they bowed their heads and worshiped the LORD with their faces to the ground.
7Also Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, helped the people to understand the Law; and the people stood in their place. 8So they read distinctly from the book, in the Law of God; and they gave the sense, and helped them to understand the reading.

Nehemiah 8:17-19

17So the whole assembly of those who had returned from the captivity made booths and sat under the booths; for since the days of Joshua the son of Nun until that day the children of Israel had not done so. And there was very great gladness. 18Also day by day, from the first day until the last day, he read from the Book of the Law of God. And they kept the feast seven days; and on the eighth day there was a sacred assembly, according to the prescribed manner.

Acts 13:15
And after the reading of the Law and the Prophets, the rulers of the synagogue sent to them, saying, “Men and brethren, if you have any word of exhortation for the people, say on.”

E. The People confirmed the Law and the Prophets

For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and goats, with water, scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people,

F. Jesus confirmed the Law and the Prophets

The following verses indicate that Jesus referred to the Law and the Prophets as authoritative, as well as indestructible, unbreakable and inerrant.

1.  Jesus believed all the Hebrew Scriptures to be authoritative.

Matthew 5:17-19
17Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. 18For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled. 19Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.”

Luke 24:25-27
25Then He said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! 26Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?” 27And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.

Luke 24:32
And they said to one another, “Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?”

Luke 24:44
Then He said to them, “These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.”

Luke 24:45
And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures.

John 5:39
You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me.

John 5:45-47

45Do not think that I shall accuse you to the Father; there is one who accuses you--Moses, in whom you trust. 46For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me. 47But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”

John 6:45
It is written in the prophets, “And they shall all be taught by God.’[Isaiah 54:13] Therefore everyone who has heard and learned [M-Text reads [hears and has learned] from the Father comes to Me.

Isaiah 54
13All your children shall be taught by the LORD,
And great shall be the peace of your children.

John 7:38
He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”

Isaiah 12
1 And in that day you will say:
        “O LORD, I will praise You;
Though You were angry with me,
Your anger is turned away, and You comfort me.
        2Behold, God is my salvation,
        I will trust and not be afraid;
        “For YAH, the LORD, is my strength and song;
He also has become my salvation.”‘ [Exodus 15:2]
3Therefore with joy you will draw water
        From the wells of salvation.
4And in that day you will say:
        “Praise the LORD, call upon His name;
Declare His deeds among the peoples,
Make mention that His name is exalted.

Sirach 24:30-32 (See J.P. Holding’s commentary)

6I said, “You are gods, [Hebrew elohim, mighty ones; that is, the judges]
And all of you are children of the Most High.
7But you shall die like men,
And fall like one of the princes.”

Matthew 18:16
But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that “by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.’[Deuteronomy 19:15]

17 “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. 18For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.

Matthew 7:11-12

11If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him! 12Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.

Matthew 11:13
For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.

Matthew 15:3-6

3He answered and said to them, “Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition? 4For God commanded, saying, “Honor your father and your mother’; [Exodus 20:12; Deuteronomy 5:16] and, “He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’ [Exodus 21:17]  5But you say, “Whoever says to his father or mother, “Whatever profit you might have received from me is a gift to God”-- 6then he need not honor his father or mother.’ [NU-Text omits or mother] Thus you have made the commandment [NU-Text reads word] of God of no effect by your tradition.

Matthew 22:38-40

Mark 2:25-27

25But He said to them, “Have you never read what David did when he was in need and hungry, he and those with him: 26how he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the showbread, which is not lawful to eat except for the priests, and also gave some to those who were with him?”
27And He said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.

Luke 6:3-5

3But Jesus answering them said, “Have you not even read this, what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: 4how he went into the house of God, took and ate the showbread, and also gave some to those with him, which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat?” 5And He said to them, “The Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.”

1 Samuel 21:2-6
2So David said to Ahimelech the priest, “The king has ordered me on some business, and said to me, “Do not let anyone know anything about the business on which I send you, or what I have commanded you.’ And I have directed my young men to such and such a place. 3Now therefore, what have you on hand? Give me five loaves of bread in my hand, or whatever can be found.” 4And the priest answered David and said, “There is no common bread on hand; but there is holy bread, if the young men have at least kept themselves from women.”
5Then David answered the priest, and said to him, “Truly, women have been kept from us about three days since I came out. And the vessels of the young men are holy, and the bread is in effect common, even though it was consecrated in the vessel this day.”
6So the priest gave him holy bread; for there was no bread there but the showbread which had been taken from before the LORD, in order to put hot bread in its place on the day when it was taken away.

2.  Jesus denounced those who were unfamiliar with the Hebrew Scriptures.

Matthew 22:29
Jesus answered and said to them, “You are mistaken, not knowing the Scriptures nor the power of God.

3.  Jesus believed the Scriptures were inspired by the Holy Spirit.

44”The LORD said to my Lord,
        “Sit at My right hand,
Till I make Your enemies Your footstool”‘?

A Psalm of David.
1 The LORD said to my Lord,
        “Sit at My right hand,
Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.”

The Apostle Paul was also in agreement:

Acts 2
34”For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself:
“The LORD said to my Lord,
        “Sit at My right hand,
35Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.”‘

Psalm 110
A Psalm of David.
1 The LORD said to my Lord,
        “Sit at My right hand,
Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.”

Luke 4:16-18

16 So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. 17And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:
18”The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me,
        Because He has anointed Me
        To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, [NU-Text omits to heal the brokenhearted]
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
        To set at liberty those who are oppressed;

Isaiah 42:1-2

1 “The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon Me,
Because the LORD has anointed Me
        To preach good tidings to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives,
        And the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
2To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD,
        And the day of vengeance of our God;
        To comfort all who mourn,

4.  Jesus believed the Hebrew Scriptures were prophetic.

Mark 12:10
Have you not even read this Scripture: “The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone.

Psalm 118:21-23

21I will praise You,
        For You have answered me,
        And have become my salvation.
22The stone which the builders rejected
        Has become the chief cornerstone.
        23This was the LORD’s doing;
It is marvelous in our eyes.

Mark 14
27 Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will be made to stumble because of Me this night, [NU-Text omits because of Me this night] for it is written:
        “I will strike the Shepherd,
And the sheep will be scattered
.’

Zechariah 13:7
7”Awake, O sword, against My Shepherd, Against the Man who is My Companion,” Says the LORD of hosts. “Strike the Shepherd, And the sheep will be scattered; Then I will turn My hand against the little ones.

Matthew 26:53-55

53Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more than twelve legions of angels? 54How then could the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must happen thus?”
55In that hour Jesus said to the multitudes, “Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to take Me? I sat daily with you, teaching in the temple, and you did not seize Me.

Matthew 26:56
But all this was done that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples forsook Him and fled.

Luke 4:16-21

16 So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. 17And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:
18”The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me,
        Because He has anointed Me
        To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, [NU-Text omits to heal the brokenhearted]
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
        To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
19To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD.” [Isaiah 61:1, 2]
20Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

Isaiah 61:1-2
1 “The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon Me,
Because the LORD has anointed Me
        To preach good tidings to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives,
        And the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
2To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD,
        And the day of vengeance of our God;
        To comfort all who mourn,

Luke 24:44-46
44 Then He said to them, “These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.” 45And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures.
46Then He said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise [NU-Text reads written, that the Christ should suffer and rise] from the dead the third day,

John 5:39-45
39You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. 40But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life.
41”I do not receive honor from men. 42But I know you, that you do not have the love of God in you. 43I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive. 44How can you believe, who receive honor from one another, and do not seek the honor that comes from the only God? 45Do not think that I shall accuse you to the Father; there is one who accuses you--Moses, in whom you trust.

5.  Jesus referred to the Hebrew Scriptures as the Word of God.

Mark 7:11-13
11But you say, “If a man says to his father or mother, “Whatever profit you might have received from me is Corban”--’ (that is, a gift to God), 12then you no longer let him do anything for his father or his mother, 13making the word of God of no effect through your tradition which you have handed down. And many such things you do.”

Mark 12:24-26

24 Jesus answered and said to them, “Are you not therefore mistaken, because you do not know the

Scriptures nor the power of God25For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. 26But concerning the dead, that they rise, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the burning bush passage, how God spoke to him, saying, “I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? [Exodus 3:6, 15] 27He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living. You are therefore greatly mistaken.”

Exodus 3:6
6Moreover He said, “I am the God of your father--the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look upon God.

Exodus 3:15
15Moreover God said to Moses, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel: “The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is My name forever, and this is My memorial to all generations.’

Luke 4:4
But Jesus answered him, saying, [Deuteronomy 8:3] “It is written, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.”‘ [NU-Text omits but by every word of God]

Deuteronomy 8:3
So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the LORD.

John 17:17
Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.

1 Kings 17:24
Then the woman said to Elijah, “Now by this I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of the LORD in your mouth is the truth.”

Psalm 119:160
The entirety of Your word is truth, And every one of Your righteous judgments endures forever.

Ephesians 1:13
In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise,

So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the LORD.

Luke 4:8
And Jesus answered and said to him, “Get behind Me, Satan! [NU-Text omits Get behind Me, Satan] For [NU-Text and M-Text omit For] it is written, “You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.”  [Deuteronomy 6:13]

Deuteronomy 6
13You shall fear the LORD your God and serve Him, and shall take oaths in His name.

b.  The Prophets.

Matthew 4:12-16
12 Now when Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, He departed to Galilee. 13And leaving Nazareth, He came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali, 14that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying:
15”The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan,
        Galilee of the Gentiles:
16The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light,
And upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death
Light has dawned.” [Isaiah 9:1, 2]

Isaiah 9:1-2
1 Nevertheless the gloom will not be upon her who is distressed,
As when at first He lightly esteemed
The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
And afterward more heavily oppressed her,
By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan,
        In Galilee of the Gentiles.
2The people who walked in darkness
        Have seen a great light;
Those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death,
Upon them a light has shined.

Matthew 8:17
that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying: “He Himself took our infirmities And bore our sicknesses.” [Isaiah 53:4]

Isaiah 53:4
4Surely He has borne our griefs
        And carried our sorrows;
        Yet we esteemed Him stricken,
        Smitten by God, and afflicted.

Matthew 12:16-18

16Yet He warned them not to make Him known, 17that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying:
18”Behold! My Servant whom I have chosen,
My Beloved in whom My soul is well pleased!
I will put My Spirit upon Him,
And He will declare justice to the Gentiles.

19He will not quarrel nor cry out,
Nor will anyone hear His voice in the streets.
20A bruised reed He will not break,
And smoking flax He will not quench,
        Till He sends forth justice to victory;
21And in His name Gentiles will trust.” [Isaiah 42:1-4]

Isaiah 42:1-4
1 “Behold! My Servant whom I uphold,
My Elect One in whom My soul delights!
        I have put My Spirit upon Him;
He will bring forth justice to the Gentiles.
2He will not cry out, nor raise His voice,
Nor cause His voice to be heard in the street.
3A bruised reed He will not break,
        And smoking flax He will not quench;
He will bring forth justice for truth.
4He will not fail nor be discouraged,
        Till He has established justice in the earth;
And the coastlands shall wait for His law.”

Matthew 15:8
“These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And [NU-Text omits draw near to Me with their mouth, And] honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me.

Mark 7:6
6He answered and said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: “This people honors Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me.

Isaiah 29:13
Therefore the Lord said: “Inasmuch as these people draw near with their mouths And honor Me with their lips, But have removed their hearts far from Me, And their fear toward Me is taught by the commandment of men,

c.  The Writings.

Matthew 22:43-45
43He said to them, “How then does David in the Spirit call Him “Lord,’ saying:
44”The LORD said to my Lord,
        “Sit at My right hand,
Till I make Your enemies Your footstool”‘?
45If David then calls Him “Lord,’ how is He his Son?” [Psalm 110:1]

Mark 12:35-37

35 Then Jesus answered and said, while He taught in the temple, “How is it that the scribes say that the Christ is the Son of David? 36For David himself said by the Holy Spirit:
“The LORD said to my Lord,
        “Sit at My right hand,
Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.”‘
37Therefore David himself calls Him “Lord’; how is He then his Son?”
And the common people heard Him gladly.

Luke 20:42-44

42Now David himself said in the Book of Psalms:
“The LORD said to my Lord,
        “Sit at My right hand,
43Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.”‘

Psalm 110:1
The LORD said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.”

Acts 2:34-36
34”For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself:
“The LORD said to my Lord,
        “Sit at My right hand,
35Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.”‘
36”Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.”

Hebrews 1:13
But to which of the angels has He ever said: “Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool”?

7.  Jesus acknowledged the Passover seder, and the covenant God made with Israel.

Matthew 26:26-29

26 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed [M-Text reads gave thanks for] and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.”
27Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. 28For this is My blood of the new [NU-Text omits new] covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. 29But I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.”

Mark 14:22-25
22 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them and said, “Take, eat; [NU-Text omits eat]. this is My body.”
23Then He took the cup, and when He had given thanks He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24And He said to them, “This is My blood of the new [NU-Text omits new] covenant, which is shed for many. 25Assuredly, I say to you, I will no longer drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”

Luke 22:14-20
14 When the hour had come, He sat down, and the twelve [NU-Text omits twelve] apostles with Him. 15Then He said to them, “With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; 16for I say to you, I will no longer eat of it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”
17Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves; 18for I say to you, [NU-Text adds from now on] I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”
19And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”
20Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.

1 Corinthians 11
23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; 24and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; [NU-Text omits Take, eat] this is My body which is broken [NU-Text omits broken] for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 25In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.
26For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.

Exodus 24
8And Moses took the blood, sprinkled it on the people, and said, “This is the blood of the covenant which the LORD has made with you according to all these words.”

Jeremiah 31
31 “Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah

G.  Jude confirmed 2 Peter as authoritative.

Jude records fulfillment of Peter’s words, citing from 2 Peter:

Jude 1
4For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord God [NU-Text omits God].and our Lord Jesus Christ. 5 But I want to remind you, though you once knew this, that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe. 6And the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day; 7as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities around them in a similar manner to these, having given themselves over to sexual immorality and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.
8Likewise also these dreamers defile the flesh, reject authority, and speak evil of dignitaries.

2 Peter 2
10and especially those who walk according to the flesh in the lust of uncleanness and despise authority. They are presumptuous, self-willed. They are not afraid to speak evil of dignitaries,

Jude 1
10But these speak evil of whatever they do not know; and whatever they know naturally, like brute beasts, in these things they corrupt themselves.

2 Peter 2
12 But these, like natural brute beasts made to be caught and destroyed, speak evil of the things they do not understand, and will utterly perish in their own corruption,

Jude 1
11Woe to them! For they have gone in the way of Cain, have run greedily in the error of Balaam for profit, and perished in the rebellion of Korah.

2 Peter 2
15They have forsaken the right way and gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness;

Jude 1
12 These are spots in your love feasts, while they feast with you without fear, serving only themselves. They are clouds without water, carried about [NU-Text and M-Text read along] by the winds; late autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, pulled up by the roots; 13raging waves of the sea, foaming up their own shame; wandering stars for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever.

2 Peter 2
17These are wells without water, clouds [NU-Text reads and mists].carried by a tempest, for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever, [NU-Text omits forever]

Jude 1
15to execute judgment on all, to convict all who are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have committed in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.”

2 Peter 2
6and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, making them an example to those who afterward would live ungodly;

Jude quotes 2 Peter 3:2-3 and acknowledges it as quote from apostles.

Jude 1
17But you, beloved, remember the words which were spoken before by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ: 18how they told you that there would be mockers in the last time who would walk according to their own ungodly lusts.

2 Peter 3
2that you may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us, [NU-Text and M-Text read commandment of the apostles of your Lord and Savior or commandment of your apostles of the Lord and Savior] the apostles of the Lord and Savior, 3knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts,

H. Peter denounced false prophets and equated Paul’s epistles with Scripture.

2 Peter 2:1-3

1 But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction. 2And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed. 3By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time their judgment has not been idle, and their destruction does [M-Text reads will not] not slumber.

I. Paul confirmed Luke’s testimony as Scripture.

1 Timothy 5:18
For the Scripture says, “You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain,” [Deuteronomy 25:4] and, “The laborer is worthy of his wages.” [Luke 10:7]

1 Corinthians 9:9
For it is written in the law of Moses, “You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain.” [Deuteronomy 25:4] Is it oxen God is concerned about?

Deuteronomy 25:4
You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain.

Luke 10:7
And remain in the same house, eating and drinking such things as they give, for the laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not go from house to house.

23 Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, greets you, 24as do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas, Luke, my fellow laborers.
25The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.

K.  Paul acknowledged other apostles and prophets.

Acts 18:24-26

24 Now a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man and mighty in the Scriptures, came to Ephesus. 25This man had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things of the Lord, though he knew only the baptism of John. 26So he began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Aquila and Priscilla heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately.

Acts 19:2-4

2he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?”
So they said to him, “We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.”
3And he said to them, “Into what then were you baptized?”
So they said, “Into John’s baptism.”
4Then Paul said, “John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.”

1 Corinthians 1:12
Now I say this, that each of you says, “I am of Paul,” or “I am of Apollos,” or “I am of Cephas,” or “I am of Christ.”

1 Corinthians 3:4-6

4For when one says, “I am of Paul,” and another, “I am of Apollos,” are you not carnal?
5 Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers through whom you believed, as the Lord gave to each one? 6I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase.

1 Corinthians 3:22
whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas, or the world or life or death, or things present or things to come--all are yours.

1 Corinthians 4:6
Now these things, brethren, I have figuratively transferred to myself and Apollos for your sakes, that you may learn in us not to think beyond what is written, that none of you may be puffed up on behalf of one against the other.

and that He was seen by Cephas, then by the twelve.

1 Corinthians 15:7
After that He was seen by James, then by all the apostles.

1 Corinthians 16:12
Now concerning our brother Apollos, I strongly urged him to come to you with the brethren, but he was quite unwilling to come at this time; however, he will come when he has a convenient time.

Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, [NU-Text reads Cephas] and remained with him fifteen days.

and when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that had been given to me, they gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised.

and when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that had been given to me, they gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised.

2.  Acknowledgement by God in the use of miracles.

Acts 14:8-10
8 And in Lystra a certain man without strength in his feet was sitting, a cripple from his mother’s womb, who had never walked. 9This man heard Paul speaking. Paul, observing him intently and seeing that he had faith to be healed, 10said with a loud voice, “Stand up straight on your feet!” And he leaped and walked.

Acts 16:16-18
16 Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling. 17This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, “These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation.” 18And this she did for many days.
But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And he came out that very hour.

Acts 19:11-12
11 Now God worked unusual miracles by the hands of Paul, 12so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were brought from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out of them.

Acts 20:9-12

9And in a window sat a certain young man named Eutychus, who was sinking into a deep sleep. He was overcome by sleep; and as Paul continued speaking, he fell down from the third story and was taken up dead. 10But Paul went down, fell on him, and embracing him said, “Do not trouble yourselves, for his life is in him.” 11Now when he had come up, had broken bread and eaten, and talked a long while, even till daybreak, he departed. 12And they brought the young man in alive, and they were not a little comforted.

Acts 28:4-6
4So when the natives saw the creature hanging from his hand, they said to one another, “No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he has escaped the sea, yet justice does not allow to live.” 5But he shook off the creature into the fire and suffered no harm. 6However, they were expecting that he would swell up or suddenly fall down dead. But after they had looked for a long time and saw no harm come to him, they changed their minds and said that he was a god.

Acts 28:7-9
7In that region there was an estate of the leading citizen of the island, whose name was Publius, who received us and entertained us courteously for three days. 8And it happened that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and dysentery. Paul went in to him and prayed, and he laid his hands on him and healed him. 9So when this was done, the rest of those on the island who had diseases also came and were healed.

M.  As an Apostle, Paul had authority.

2 Thessalonians 3:14
And if anyone does not obey our word in this epistle, note that person and do not keep company with him, that he may be ashamed.

1 Corinthians 2:10-16

10But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. 11For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. 12Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.
13These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy [NU-Text omits Holy] Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. 14But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. 15But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one. 16For “who has known the mind of the LORD that he may instruct Him?” [Isaiah 40:13] But we have the mind of Christ.

Isaiah 40
13Who has directed the Spirit of the LORD,
Or as His counselor has taught Him?

 1 Corinthians 7:17
But as God has distributed to each one, as the Lord has called each one, so let him walk. And so I ordain in all the churches.

1 Corinthians 14:36-38

36Or did the word of God come originally from you? Or was it you only that it reached? 37If anyone thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things which I write to you are the commandments of the Lord. 38But if anyone is ignorant, let him be ignorant. [NU-Text reads if anyone does not recognize this, he is not recognized]

P. What God says, the Bible says.  What the Bible says, God says.

This section is adapted from Norman L. Geisler’s article, “Bible, Evidence for,” from The Baker Encyclopedia of Christian Apologetics, Baker Books, 1999, page 92, with corrections to the verses given and new verses added.  Note that what God says is equated with Scripture, and vice versa.

What God says …

…The Bible says

Genesis 12:3
I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”

Genesis 18:18
since Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?

Genesis 22:18
In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”

Genesis 22:18
In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”

Genesis 28:14
Also your descendants shall be as the dust of the earth; you shall spread abroad to the west and the east, to the north and the south; and in you and in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed.

Galatians 3:8
And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, “In you all the nations shall be blessed.”

What God says…

…The Bible Says

Exodus 9:16
But indeed for this purpose I have raised you up, that I may show My power in you, and that My name may be declared in all the earth.

Romans 9:17
For the Scripture says to the Pharaoh, “For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I may show My power in you, and that My name may be declared in all the earth.”

What the Bible says…

…God says

Genesis 2:24
Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

Matthew 19:4-6
4And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who made[NU-Text reads created] them at the beginning “made them male and female,’ [Genesis 1:27; 5:2]  5and said, “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? 6So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.”

What the Bible says…

…God says

Psalm 2:1
Why do the nations rage, And the people plot a vain thing?

Acts 4:24-25

24So when they heard that, they raised their voice to God with one accord and said: “Lord, You are God, who made heaven and earth and the sea, and all that is in them, 25who by the mouth of Your servant David [NU-Text reads who through the Holy Spirit, by the mouth of our father, Your servant David] have said:

        “Why did the nations rage,

And the people plot vain things?

What the Bible says…

…God says

Psalm 2:7
“I will declare the decree: The LORD has said to Me, “You are My Son, Today I have begotten You.

Acts 13:33

33God has fulfilled this for us their children, in that He has raised up Jesus. As it is also written in the second Psalm:

        “You are My Son,

        Today I have begotten You.’

Hebrews 1:5

5 For to which of the angels did He ever say:

        “You are My Son,

        Today I have begotten You”?

And again:

“I will be to Him a Father,

And He shall be to Me a Son”?

Hebrews 5:5

5 So also Christ did not glorify Himself to become High Priest, but it was He who said to Him:

        “You are My Son,

        Today I have begotten You.”

What the Bible says…

…God says

Psalm 16:10
For You will not leave my soul in Sheol, Nor will You allow Your Holy One to see corruption.

Acts 13:35
Therefore He also says in another Psalm: “You will not allow Your Holy One to see corruption.’

What the Bible says…

…God says

Psalm 95:7-8

7For He is our God,

And we are the people of His pasture,

And the sheep of His hand.

Today, if you will hear His voice:

8”Do not harden your hearts, as in the rebellion,[ Or Meribah]

As in the day of trial[Or Massah] in the wilderness,

Hebrews 3:7-15

7 Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says:

“Today, if you will hear His voice,

8Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion,

In the day of trial in the wilderness,

9Where your fathers tested Me, tried Me,

And saw My works forty years.

10Therefore I was angry with that generation,

And said, “They always go astray in their heart,

And they have not known My ways.’

11So I swore in My wrath,

“They shall not enter My rest.”‘

12Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; 13but exhort one another daily, while it is called “Today,” lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. 14For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end, 15while it is said:

“Today, if you will hear His voice,

Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”

Hebrews 4:7

7again He designates a certain day, saying in David, “Today,” after such a long time, as it has been said:

“Today, if you will hear His voice,

        Do not harden your hearts.”

What the Bible says …

…God says

Psalm 104:4

 4Who makes His angels spirits,

His ministers a flame of fire.

Hebrews 1:7

7And of the angels He says:

        “Who makes His angels spirits

And His ministers a flame of fire.”

What the Bible says …

… God says

Isaiah 55:3

3Incline your ear, and come to Me.

        Hear, and your soul shall live;

And I will make an everlasting covenant with you--

        The sure mercies of David.

Acts 13:34

34And that He raised Him from the dead, no more to return to corruption, He has spoken thus:

“I will give you the sure mercies of David.’

What the Bible says …

… God says

Acts 2:34-35
34”For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself:
“The LORD said to my Lord,
        “Sit at My right hand,
35Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.”

Matthew 22:44
44”The LORD said to my Lord,
        “Sit at My right hand,
Till I make Your enemies Your footstool”‘?

Mark 12:36
36For David himself said by the Holy Spirit:
“The LORD said to my Lord,
        “Sit at My right hand,
Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.”‘

Psalm 110:1
1 The LORD said to my Lord,
        “Sit at My right hand,
Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.”
