VI.
Prophetic Confirmation.
A.
The Jewish
Authorities, and the people, anticipated the Messiah from prophecies in
the
Hebrew Scriptures.
Responding
to the prophecy given in Micah 5:2, Wise Men from the East came to Jerusalem
to worship the promised Messiah.
|
Matthew 2:1-2
1 Now after Jesus was born in
Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from
the East came to Jerusalem, 2saying, “Where is He who has
been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and
have come to worship Him.”
Matthew 2:3-6
3When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and
all Jerusalem with him.
4And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of
the people together, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be
born.
5So they said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus
it is written by the prophet:
6”But you,
Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
Are not the least among the
rulers of Judah;
For out of you shall come a
Ruler
Who will shepherd My people
Israel.”
|
Micah 5:2
“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, Though you are little among the thousands of Judah, Yet out
of you shall come forth to Me The One to be
Ruler in Israel, Whose goings forth are from of old, From everlasting.”

Luke
2:25-26
25 And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem
whose name was Simeon, and this man was just and devout, waiting for
the
Consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26And
it
had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death
before
he had seen the Lord’s Christ.
Luke 2:36-38
36 Now there was one, Anna, a
prophetess, the
daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, and
had
lived with a husband seven years from her virginity; 37and
this
woman was a widow of about eighty-four years, [NU-Text
reads a widow until she was eighty-four]
who did not depart from the temple, but served God with
fastings and prayers night and day. 38And coming in that
instant she
gave thanks to the Lord, [NU-Text reads to
God] and spoke of Him
to all those who looked for redemption in Jerusalem.
Luke 3:15
Now as the people were
in expectation, and all reasoned
in their hearts about John,
whether he was the Christ or
not,
|
John 1:19-21
19 Now this is the testimony of
John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem
to ask him, “Who are you?”
20He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am
not the Christ.”
21And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?”
He said, “I am not.”
“Are you the Prophet?”
And he answered, “No.”
John 3:28
You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, “I am
not the Christ,’
but, “I have been sent before Him.’

Isaiah 40:3
The voice of one crying in the wilderness: “Prepare
the way of the LORD; Make
straight in the desert [Following Masoretic Text, Targum, and Vulgate;
Septuagint omits in the desert ] A highway
for our God.
1 In those days John the Baptist
came preaching in the wilderness of Judea,
2and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!”
3For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, saying:
“The voice of one crying in
the wilderness:
“Prepare the way of the
LORD;
Make His paths straight.”‘ [Isaiah 40:3]
4Now John himself was clothed in camel’s hair, with a
leather belt around his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey.
5Then Jerusalem, all
Judea, and all the region around the Jordan
went out to him 6and were baptized by him in the Jordan,
confessing their sins.
7But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees
coming to his baptism, he said to them, “Brood of vipers! Who warned
you to flee from the wrath to come? 8Therefore bear fruits
worthy of repentance, 9and do not think to say to
yourselves, “We have Abraham as our father.’ For I say to you that God
is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones. 10And
even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. Therefore every tree
which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
11I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is
coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to
carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. [M-Text omits and fire] 12His winnowing fan is in His hand, and
He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather His wheat
into the barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”

also Mark 1:1-8; Luke 3:1-20.
John
7:40-43
40 Therefore many [NU-Text
reads some] from the crowd, when they
heard
this saying, said, “Truly this is the Prophet.” 41Others
said, “This
is the Christ.”
But some said, “Will the Christ come out of Galilee?
42Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the seed
of David
and from the town of Bethlehem,
where David was?” 43So there was a division among the people
because
of Him.
John 10:24
Then the Jews surrounded Him and said to Him,
“How long do You keep us in
doubt? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly.”

Jesus confirmed prophecies concerning Himself.
|
Matthew 11:3-5
3and said to Him, “Are You the
Coming One, or do we look for another?”
4Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John
the things which you hear and see: 5The blind see and the
lame walk; the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear; the dead are
raised up and the poor have the gospel preached to them.
|
Isaiah 35:4-6
4Say to those who are fearful-hearted,
“Be strong, do not fear!
Behold, your God will come
with vengeance,
With the recompense of God;
He will come and save you.”
5Then the eyes of
the blind shall be opened,
And the ears of the deaf
shall be unstopped.
6Then the lame
shall leap like a deer,
And the tongue of the dumb
sing.
For waters shall burst forth
in the wilderness,
And streams in the desert.
Isaiah 29:17-19
17 Is it not yet a very little
while
Till Lebanon
shall be turned into a fruitful field,
And the fruitful field be
esteemed as a forest?
18In that day the
deaf shall hear the words of the book,
And the eyes of the blind
shall see out of obscurity and out of darkness.
19The humble also
shall increase their joy in the LORD,
And the poor among men shall
rejoice
In the Holy One of Israel.

My messenger before
Your face, Who will prepare Your way before You.”

|
Malachi 3:1

the way before Me. And the Lord, whom you seek, Will suddenly come to His temple, Even the Messenger of the
covenant, In whom you delight. Behold, He is coming,” Says the LORD of hosts.

Matthew 22:42-45
42saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose
Son is He?”
They said to Him, “The Son of David.”
43He said to them, “How then does David in the Spirit
call Him “Lord,’ saying:
44”The LORD said
to my Lord,
“Sit at My right hand,
Till I make Your enemies
Your footstool”‘?
45If David then calls Him “Lord,’ how is He his Son?”
Acts 2:33-35
33Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God,
and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He
poured out this which you now see and hear.
34”For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he
says himself:
“The LORD said to my Lord,
“Sit at My right hand,
35Till I make
Your enemies Your footstool.”
Hebrews 1:13
But to which of the angels has He ever said: “Sit
at My right
hand, Till I make Your enemies Your
footstool”?
|
Psalm
110:1
The LORD said to my Lord, “Sit at My
right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.”
2
Samuel 7:14
I will be his
Father, and he shall
be My son.
If he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with
the rod of men and with the blows of the sons of
men.
1
Chronicles 22:10
He shall build a house for My
name, and he shall be My son, and I will
be his Father; and I will establish
the throne of his kingdom over Israel
forever.’
Psalm 2:4-6
4He who sits in the heavens shall laugh;
The LORD shall hold them in
derision.
5Then He shall
speak to them in His wrath,
And distress them in His
deep displeasure:
6”Yet I have set
My King
On My holy hill of Zion.”
Psalm
68:6
God sets the solitary in families; He
brings out those who are
bound into prosperity; But the rebellious
dwell in a dry land.

Matthew 26:24
The Son of Man indeed goes just as it is written of Him, but
woe to that man by
whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born.”
Mark 14:21
The Son of Man indeed goes just as it is written of Him, but
woe to that man by
whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had never been born.”
Luke 22:22
And truly the Son of Man goes as it has been determined, but
woe to that man by
whom He is betrayed!”
John 13:18
“I do not speak concerning all of you. I know whom I have chosen; but
that the Scripture may be fulfilled, “He who eats bread
with Me [NU-Text reads My bread] has lifted up his heel
against Me.’
[Psalm 41:9]
|
Psalm 41:9
Even my own familiar friend in whom I trusted, Who ate my bread, Has lifted
up his heel against me.
|
|
Matthew 26:31
Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will be
made to stumble because of Me this night, for it is written: “I will strike the Shepherd,
And the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’
[Zechariah 13:7]
Mark 14:27
Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will be
made to stumble because of Me this night, [NU-Text omits [because
of Me this night] for it is written: “I will
strike the Shepherd,
And the sheep will be scattered.’ [NU-Text omits
because of Me this night]
|
Zechariah 13:7
“Awake, O sword, against My
Shepherd, Against the Man
who is My Companion,” Says the LORD of hosts. “Strike the
Shepherd, And the sheep will be scattered; Then I will turn My hand against the little ones.
|
|
Matthew 15:8
“These people draw near to Me with their mouth,
And [NU-Text omits draw near to Me
with their mouth, And] honor Me with their
lips, But their heart is far
from Me.
Mark 7:5-7
5Then the Pharisees and scribes
asked Him, “Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition
of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands?”
6He answered and said to them, “Well did Isaiah
prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written:
“This people honors Me with
their lips,
But their heart is far from
Me.
7And in vain they
worship Me,
Teaching as doctrines the
commandments of men.
|
Isaiah 29:13
Therefore the Lord said: “Inasmuch as these people draw near with their
mouths And honor Me with their lips, But have
removed their hearts far from Me, And their fear toward Me is taught by the commandment
of men,
|
|
Mark 9:13
But I say to you that Elijah has also come, and
they did to him whatever they wished, as it is written
of him.”
|
Malachi 4:4-6
4”Remember the Law of Moses, My
servant,
Which I commanded him in
Horeb for all Israel,
With the statutes and
judgments.
5Behold, I will
send you Elijah the prophet
Before the coming of the
great and dreadful day of the LORD.
6And he will turn
The hearts of the fathers to
the children,
And the hearts of the
children to their fathers,
Lest I come and strike the
earth with a curse.”
|
|
Matthew 21:42
Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: “The stone
which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone. This was the LORD’s doing, And it
is marvelous in our eyes’?
Mark 12:10
Have you not even read this Scripture: “The stone which the builders
rejected Has become the chief
cornerstone.
Luke 20:17
Then He looked at them and said, “What then is this that is written:
“The stone which the builders rejected Has become
the chief cornerstone’? [Psalm 118:22]
|
Psalm 118:21-23
21I will praise You,
For You have answered me,
And have become my
salvation.
22The stone which
the builders rejected
Has become the chief
cornerstone.
23This was the
LORD’s doing;
It is marvelous in our eyes.
|
Mark 14:43-49
43 And immediately, while He was still
speaking,
Judas, one of the twelve, with a great multitude with swords and clubs,
came
from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. 44Now
His
betrayer had given them a signal, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the
One;
seize Him and lead Him away safely.”
45As soon as he had come, immediately he went up to Him and
said to
Him, “Rabbi, Rabbi!” and kissed Him.
46Then they laid their hands on Him and took Him. 47And
one of those who stood by drew his sword and struck the servant of the
high
priest, and cut off his ear.
48Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Have you come out,
as
against a robber, with swords and clubs to take Me? 49I
was daily
with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize Me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”
|
Luke 1:16-18
16And he will turn many of the
children of Israel
to the Lord their God. 17He will also go before Him in the
spirit and power of Elijah, “to turn the hearts of the fathers to the
children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready
a people prepared for the Lord.”
18And Zacharias said to the angel, “How shall I know
this? For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years.”
|
Malachi 4:4-6
4”Remember the Law of Moses, My
servant,
Which I commanded him in
Horeb for all Israel,
With the statutes and
judgments.
5Behold, I will
send you Elijah the prophet
Before the coming of the
great and dreadful day of the LORD.
6And he will turn
The hearts of the fathers to
the children,
And the hearts of the
children to their fathers,
Lest I come and strike the
earth with a curse.”

16 So He came to Nazareth,
where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the
synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. 17And He
was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the
book, He found the place where it was written:
18”The Spirit of
the LORD is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the
poor;
He has sent Me to heal the
brokenhearted, [NU-Text omits to heal the brokenhearted]
To proclaim liberty to the
captives
And recovery of sight to the
blind,
To set at liberty those who
are oppressed;
19To proclaim the
acceptable year of the LORD.” [Isaiah 61:1, 2]
20Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the
attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue
were fixed on Him. 21And He began to say to them, “Today
this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
|
1 “The Spirit of the
Lord GOD is upon Me,
Because the LORD has
anointed Me
To preach good tidings to
the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the
brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the
captives,
And the opening of the
prison to those who are bound;
2To proclaim the
acceptable year of the LORD,
And the day of vengeance of
our God;
To comfort all who mourn,
|
|
Mark 15:28
So the Scripture was
fulfilled [Isaiah 53:12] which says, “And He was numbered with
the transgressors.”
[NU-Text omits this verse]
Luke 22:37
For I say to you that this which is written must
still be accomplished in Me: “And He was numbered with
the transgressors.’[Isaiah 53:12] For the things concerning Me have an
end.”
|
Isaiah 53:12
Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great, And He shall divide the spoil with the strong, Because He poured out His soul unto death, And He
was numbered with the transgressors,
And He bore the sin of
many, And made intercession for the transgressors.
|
Luke 24:27
And beginning at Moses and all the
Prophets, He expounded to them in
all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.
Luke
24:32
And they said to one another, “Did not our heart burn within us while
He talked
with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?”
Luke
24:44
Then He said to them, “These are the words which I spoke to you while I
was
still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in
the Law
of Moses and the Prophets and
the Psalms concerning Me.”
Luke 24:45
And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures.
John 2:20-22
20Then the Jews said, “It has taken
forty-six
years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?”
21But He was speaking of the temple of His body. 22Therefore,
when He had risen from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had
said this
to them; [NU-Text and M-Text omit to them]
and they believed the Scripture
and the word which Jesus had said.
John 5:45-47
45Do not think that I shall accuse you
to the
Father; there is one who accuses you--Moses, in whom you trust. 46For
if you believed Moses, you would
believe Me; for he wrote about Me. 47But
if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”
|
John 6:31
Our fathers ate the manna in the desert; as it
is written, “He gave them bread from heaven to
eat.” [Exodus 16:4; Nehemiah 9:15;
Psalm 78:24]
|
Exodus
16:4
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, I will rain bread from
heaven for you. And
the people shall go out and gather a certain quota every day, that I
may test them, whether they will walk in My law
or not.
Exodus 16:15
So when the children of Israel
saw it, they said to one another, “What is it?” For they did not know
what it was. And Moses said to them, “This is the
bread which the LORD has given
you to eat.
Psalm
78:24
Had rained down manna on them to eat, And given them of the bread of heaven.
|
|
John 13:18
“I do not speak concerning all of you. I know whom I have chosen; but
that the Scripture may be fulfilled, “He who eats bread with Me
[NU-Text reads My bread]has lifted up his heel against
Me.’ [Psalm 41:9]
John 17:12
While I was with them in the world, [NU-Text omits in the
world] I kept them in Your name. Those whom You gave Me I have
kept; [ NU-Text reads in Your name which You gave Me. And
I guarded them; ] (or [it;] )] and none of them is lost except the
son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled.
|
Psalm
41:9
Even my own familiar friend in whom
I trusted, Who ate my bread, Has lifted up his
heel against me.
|
|
Matthew 27:35
Then they crucified Him, and divided His garments, casting
lots, [NU-Text and M-Text omit the rest of this verse]
that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by
the prophet: “They divided My
garments among them, And for My clothing they cast
lots.” [NU-Text and M-Text omit the rest of this verse]
John
19:24
They said therefore among themselves, “Let us not tear it, but cast
lots for it, whose it shall be,” that the Scripture might be
fulfilled which says: “They divided My garments among them, And for My
clothing they cast lots.” [Psalm 22:18] Therefore the
soldiers did these things.
|
Psalm 22:18
They divide My
garments among them, And for My clothing they cast
lots.
|
|
John 19:28
After this, Jesus, knowing [M-Text reads seeing] that
all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be
fulfilled, said, “I thirst!”
|
Psalm
69:21
They also gave me gall for my food, And for my thirst they
gave me vinegar to drink.
|
|
Hebrews 10:5-8
5 Therefore, when He came into
the world, He said:
“Sacrifice and offering You
did not desire,
But a body You have prepared
for Me.
6In burnt
offerings and sacrifices for sin
You had no pleasure.
7Then I said,
“Behold, I have come--
In the volume of the book it
is written of Me--
To do Your will, O God.”‘
8Previously saying, “Sacrifice and offering, burnt
offerings, and offerings for sin You did not desire, nor had pleasure
in them” (which are offered according to the law),
Romans 10:16
But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, "LORD, who
has believed our report?"
Jesus Christ fulfilled Isaiah 53 in
that He
Was despised and rejected (v. 3,
also Psalm 118:22)
Was a man of
sorrows (v. 3)
Carried our sorrows (v. 4)
Was smitten and afflicted (v. 4)
Was pierced for our transgressions (v. 5)
Was bruised
(v.5)
Suffered as a
lamb (v. 7)
Died with the wicked (v. 9)
Was sinless (v. 9)
Prayed for
his transgressors (v. 12)
|
Psalm 40:6-8
6Sacrifice and offering You did not desire;
My ears You have opened.
Burnt offering and sin
offering You did not require.
7Then I said,
“Behold, I come;
In the scroll of the book it
is written of me.
8I delight to do
Your will, O my God,
And Your law is within my
heart.”
1 Who has believed our
report?
And to whom has the arm of
the LORD been revealed?
2For He shall
grow up before Him as a tender plant,
And as a root out of dry
ground.
He has no form or
comeliness;
And when we see Him,
There is no beauty that we
should desire Him.
3He is despised
and rejected by men,
A Man of sorrows and
acquainted with grief.
And we hid, as it were, our
faces from Him;
He was despised, and we did
not esteem Him.
4Surely He has
borne our griefs
And carried our sorrows;
Yet we esteemed Him
stricken,
Smitten by God, and
afflicted.
5But He was
wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our
iniquities;
The chastisement for our
peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are
healed.
6All we like
sheep have gone astray;
We have turned, every one,
to his own way;
And the LORD has laid on Him
the iniquity of us all.
7He was oppressed
and He was afflicted,
Yet He opened not His mouth;
He was led as a lamb to the
slaughter,
And as a sheep before its
shearers is silent,
So He opened not His mouth.
8He was taken
from prison and from judgment,
And who will declare His
generation?
For He was cut off from the
land of the living;
For the transgressions of My
people He was stricken.
9And they [Literally he or He]
made His grave with the wicked--
But with the rich at His
death,
Because He had done no
violence,
Nor was any deceit in His
mouth.
10Yet it pleased
the LORD to bruise Him;
He has put Him to grief.
When You make His soul an
offering for sin,
He shall see His seed, He
shall prolong His days,
And the pleasure of the LORD
shall prosper in His hand.
11He shall see
the labor of His soul, [Following
Masoretic Text, Targum, and Vulgate; Dead
Sea Scrolls and Septuagint read From
the labor of His soul He shall see light]
and be satisfied.
By His knowledge My
righteous Servant shall justify many,
For He shall bear their
iniquities.
12Therefore I
will divide Him a portion with the great,
And He shall divide the
spoil with the strong,
Because He poured out His
soul unto death,
And He was numbered with the
transgressors,
And He bore the sin of many,
And made intercession for
the transgressors.

Matthew 1:1-17
1 The book of the genealogy of
Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham:
2Abraham begot Isaac, Isaac begot Jacob, and Jacob
begot Judah and his brothers. 3Judah begot Perez and Zerah
by Tamar, Perez begot Hezron, and Hezron begot Ram. 4Ram
begot Amminadab, Amminadab begot Nahshon, and Nahshon begot Salmon.
5Salmon begot Boaz by Rahab, Boaz begot Obed by Ruth, Obed begot
Jesse, 6and Jesse begot David the king.
David the king begot Solomon by her who had been the wife of Uriah.
7Solomon begot Rehoboam, Rehoboam begot Abijah, and Abijah begot
Asa. [NU-Text reads Asaph] 8Asa
begot Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat begot Joram, and Joram begot Uzziah.
9Uzziah begot Jotham, Jotham begot Ahaz, and Ahaz begot Hezekiah.
10Hezekiah begot Manasseh, Manasseh begot Amon, [NU-Text
reads Amos].
and Amon begot Josiah. 11Josiah
begot Jeconiah and his brothers about the time they were carried away
to Babylon.
12And after they were brought to Babylon,
Jeconiah begot Shealtiel, and Shealtiel begot Zerubbabel. 13Zerubbabel
begot Abiud, Abiud begot Eliakim, and Eliakim begot Azor. 14Azor
begot Zadok, Zadok begot Achim, and Achim begot Eliud. 15Eliud
begot Eleazar, Eleazar begot Matthan, and Matthan begot Jacob. 16And
Jacob begot Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus who is
called Christ.
17So all the generations from Abraham to David are
fourteen generations, from David until the captivity in Babylon
are fourteen generations, and from the captivity in Babylon
until the Christ are fourteen generations.
Acts 7:2-5
2And he said, “Brethren and fathers, listen: The God
of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia,
before he dwelt in Haran, 3and said to him, “Get out of your
country and from your relatives, and come to a land that I will show
you.’ 4Then he came out of the
land of the Chaldeans and dwelt in Haran.
And from there, when his father was dead, He moved him to this land in

1 And it came to pass in those days
that a decree
went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered.
2This
census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria.
3So all went to be registered, everyone to his own city.
4Joseph also went up from Galilee,
out of the
city of Nazareth, into Judea,
to the city of David,
which is
called Bethlehem, because
he was of
the house and lineage of David, 5to be registered with Mary,
his
betrothed wife, [NU-Text omits wife] who was with child. 6So
it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to
be
delivered. 7And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and
wrapped Him
in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no
room for
them in the inn.
Genealogy of Christ through Joseph.
Matthew
1:1-17
1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus
Christ, the
Son of David, the Son of Abraham:
2Abraham begot Isaac, Isaac begot Jacob, and Jacob begot
Judah and
his brothers. 3Judah begot Perez and Zerah by Tamar, Perez
begot
Hezron, and Hezron begot Ram. 4Ram begot Amminadab,
Amminadab begot
Nahshon, and Nahshon begot Salmon. 5Salmon begot Boaz by
Rahab, Boaz
begot Obed by Ruth, Obed begot Jesse, 6and Jesse begot David
the
king.
David the king begot Solomon by her who had been the wife of Uriah.
7Solomon
begot Rehoboam, Rehoboam begot Abijah, and Abijah begot Asa. [NU-Text
reads Asaph]. 8Asa
begot
Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat begot Joram, and Joram begot Uzziah. 9Uzziah
begot Jotham, Jotham begot Ahaz, and Ahaz begot Hezekiah. 10Hezekiah
begot Manasseh, Manasseh begot Amon, [NU-Text reads Amos] and Amon begot Josiah.
11Josiah begot Jeconiah and his brothers about the time they were
carried
away to Babylon.
15Eliud
begot
Eleazar, Eleazar begot Matthan, and Matthan begot Jacob. 16And
Jacob
begot Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus who is called
Christ.
17So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen
generations, from David until the captivity in Babylon
are fourteen generations, and from the captivity in Babylon
until the Christ are fourteen generations.
Cf. Matthew 1:18-23
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as
follows:
After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came
together, she
was found with child of the Holy Spirit. 19Then Joseph her
husband,
being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was
minded to
put her away secretly. 20But while he thought about these
things,
behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying,
“Joseph, son
of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that
which is
conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21And she will bring
forth a
Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people
from their
sins.”
22So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was
spoken
by the Lord through the prophet, saying: 23”Behold, the
virgin
shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name
Immanuel,” [Literally
God-With-Us] which is translated, “God with us.”
Isaiah 7:14
Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin
shall
conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.
[Literally God-With-Us]
2 Samuel 7:14
I will be his Father, and he shall
be My son.
If he commits iniquity, I will
chasten him with the rod of men and with the blows of the sons of men.

Matthew 2:1-6
1 Now after Jesus was born in
Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from
the East came to Jerusalem, 2saying, “Where is He who has
been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and
have come to worship Him.”
6”But you,
Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
Are not the least among the
rulers of Judah;
For out of you shall come a
Ruler
Who will shepherd My people
Israel.”‘ [Micah 5:2]
