The New Testament
Querying the QM Thesis

Matthew 8:23-34/Mark 4:35-5:20/Luke 8:22-39

J. P. Holding

We now consider together for convenience the stories of Jesus walking on water and healing the demoniac. These two stories are linked together in the same succession in all three Synoptics and therefore likely circulated together orally and/or in writing.

Matthew And entering he into the boat followed him the disciples of-him. And behold shaking great occurred in the sea so-that the boat was-covered by the waves. he But was-sleeping. And having-come-near the disciples of-him aroused him saying Lord save us we-are-perishing.
Mark And he says to-them in that the day evening having-come Let-us-go through to other side. And dismissing the crowd they-take along him as he was in the boat. And other also small-boats were with him. And occurs storm of wind great the and waves thrust into the boat so-as it already was filled. And was he on the stern on the headrest sleeping. And they awaken him and say to-him Teacher not it-matters to-you that we-are-perishing?
Luke And it-was in one of-the days and he entered into boat also the disciples with-him. And he-said to them let-us-go-over to the other-side of-the lake. And they-set-sail. sailing And them he-fell-asleep. And came-down a storm of-wind onto the lake and they-were-being-filled and were-in-danger. coming near And they-awakened him saying Master We-are-perishing.

As usual Mark is full of what would be Petrine eyewitness comments: the extra boats; that Jesus was on the headrest; the disciples' panicked reaction. Marcan priority theorists claim that Matthew and Luke removed the fear of the disciples out of embarrassment for them and to make them look better. But why does this require Mark to be written first? It is just as well said that either a) Mark added this for realism; b) Peter added in this reminisce to make tradition more "flavorful" as he preached. Either way the theory is assumed, and then the data explained in terms of it; when in fact either theory can offer a reasonable explanation. Ours is that Luke probably took notes from both Mark and Ur-Matthew here, as he offers a composite of elements from both. Our thesis is supported by the point that Mark's reference to Jesus in the boat served as an aural cue for listeners (in this pre-literate society) that a new pericope has begun (the phrase being an inclusio matched to the mention of the boat in Mark 4:1-2. QM theorists must concoct an elaborate psychological thesis that Matthew "corrected" this inconsistency; we say rather that Mark and Matthew had an independent oral tradition that Mark (Peter) modified for oral presentation.

Hawkins [Hawk.HS, 117] thinks he sees a sign of Marcan priority in the minuscule note of Mark of other boats. He thinks that Matthew would remove it because "it might be wondered how the 'other boats' weathered the storm." That qualifies as the Ivory Tower Question of the Week. It is quite doubtful that the average peasant or poor urbanite of this day is going to be asking such niggling questions that come to the mind of a scholar of leisure with too much time on his hands. Beyond this it is not that hard to think, "By gum, when Jesus calmed the storm, they came out all right, too." Finally this fits just as well with Matthean and Markan independence.

Matthew And he says to-them Why afraid are-you little-faiths? Then rising-up he-rebuked the winds and the sea and occurred calm great. the And men marveled saying Of-what-kind is this that even the winds and the sea obey him?
Mark And being-awakened he-rebuked the wind and said to-the-sea Be-silent! Be-still! And sank the wind and there was calm great. And he-said to-them Why fearful are-you so? How not you-have faith? And they feared fear great and said to one-another Who then this one is that even the wind and the sea obey him?
Luke he And being-aroused rebuked the wind and the roughness of water and they-ceased and there-was calm. he said And to-them Where is the faith of-you? fearing And they-marveled saying to one-another Who then this is that even the wind he-commands and the water and they-obey him?

Again, a Petrine eyewitness touch: the exact words of Jesus as he rebuked the storm. And here also a silk purse out of a sow's ear in favor of Markan priority: Stein [58] declares that Mark offers a grammatical awkwardness in that he uses a singular verb "obey" with the preceding compound subject ("wind and the sea") and decides that Matt and Luke must have "improved" Mark here, as they use the more proper plural verb. Stein decides that it is more likely Luke and Matt fixed Mark than that Mark messed up Matt and Luke, but he has forgotten another option, that Matt and Mark did their work independently from a common source. (That Luke may have improved Mark is an acceptable idea.)

Another claimed proof of Markan priority is that Matthew omits mention of the winds early in his account, while Mark has such a mention, and it is supposed that Matt creates tension because of his "overzealous abbreviation" of Mark [Neville, 245]. In response it is worth asking as Neville does what reader or hearer would have been so ignorant (my own word!) as to NOT automatically associate strong winds with Matt's "quake of the sea" and boat being swamped by waves. This is low-context, landlubber talk, especially if (as is supposed) the account was intended to allude to Jonah 1. One may as well say Mark was beholden to "excessive detail" and make Matthew prior on that basis.

Neville [244] notes an argument that Matthew has Jesus rebuke the disciples before he rebukes the storm, unlike Mark and Luke, and that this supposedly makes the actual stilling of the storm an "appendage". As usual the psychological explanation can be turned around: Why not see it as Matthew "heightening the miraculous power of Jesus by delaying the miracle, thereby increasing the tension within the story"? Why not argue that Mark reversed the order as part of his "dumb disciples" motif, so that he put the rebuke where it could most effectively show the disciples "dumbest"?

Matthew And coming He to the other-side into the country of-the Gergesenes met him two being-demon-possessed out of-the tombs coming-out, violent very so-as not was-able any to pass-through way that. And behold they-cried-out saying What to us and to you Jesus Son of God? Come you here before time to-torment us? was And at-a-distance from them herd pigs many feeding. the And demons begged him saying If you-expel us allow us to-go-away into the herd of pigs. And he-said to-them Go!
Mark And they came to the other-side of sea into the country of the Gadarenes And coming-out he from the boat at-once met him out of tombs man in spirit unclean who the abode had-among the tombs; even not with-chains no-one was-able to him to-bind because that he often with-fetters and chains had-been-bound and had-been-torn by him the chains and the fetters had been shattered and no-one him had strength to-subdue. And through all night and day among the hills and in the tombs he crying and cutting himself with stones. seeing And Jesus from distance he-ran and fell-down-before Him. And crying with a-voice-great said What to me and to-you Jesus Son of God the Most-High? I adjure you by God not me you-may-torment. He said for to-him Come-out the spirit the unclean out of man! And he-asked him, What of you-the-name? And he-answered saying Legion name of-me for many we-are. And he-begged him much that not then he-would-send outside the country. was And there near the mount herd pigs great feeding And begged him all the demons saying Send us into the pigs that into them we-may-enter. And allowed them immediately the Jesus.
Luke And they-sailed-down to the country of-the Gadarenes which is opposite the Galilee. going out And him onto the land met him man certain out of city who had demons from time long and garment not he-put-on but and in house not he-abode but among tombs. seeing And the Jesus and crying-out he-fell-down-before him and with-voice loud said What to-me and to-you Jesus Son of God the Most High? I-beg you not me to-torment. He-had-charged For the spirit the unclean to-come-out from the man. many For times it-had-seized him and he-was-bound chains and fetters being-guarded and tearing-apart the bonds he-was-driven by the demons into the deserted. And him the Jesus saying What to you is name? he And said Legion because demons many entered into him. And they-begged him that not he-order them into the abyss to-go-away. was And there herd pigs of-many feeding in the mountain. And they-begged him that he-allow them into those to-enter. And he-allowed them.

On the differences in location and number of men see here. As above, there is clear reason to suggest Luke using Mark (via note-taking, not direct copying) but no real reason to see Matthew using Mark as opposed to being independent. One can argue for a Marcan priority in which Matt removed all the extraneous data; or one can argue for a Matthew that reflects an original simple pericope that Peter added his own remembrances to.

Hawkins [Hawk.HS, 119] notes that this is the one place where a demons "dares to adjure Jesus" but does not explain how this shows any particular priority. One would think that this would be a positive showing Jesus' power that would not want to be eliminated, and so if anything a proof of Markan posteriority.

Matthew those And coming-out went-away into the herd of pigs. And behold rushed all the herd of pigs down the precipice into the sea and died in the waters. those And feeding fled and going -away into the city told all and of the having-been-demon-possessed. And behold all the city went out to meet-with the Jesus and seeing him they begged that he-move from the borders of-them.
Mark and rushed the herd down the precipice into the sea. they were And two-thousand and were choked in the sea. those And feeding the pigs fled and told in the city and in the fields. And they-same-out to-see what is that having-occurred. And they-come to the Jesus and behold the having-been-demon-possessed sitting and having-been-robed and being-in-his-senses the having-had the legion; and they feared. And related to-them those seeing-how it occurred to-him having-been-demon-possessed and about the pigs. And they began to-beg him to-depart from the borders of-them. And entering him into the boat begged him the demoniac that he with him. the But Jesus not did permit him but says to-him Go into the house of-you to those of-you and report to-them what things the Lord has-done and pitied you. And he-left and-began to-proclaim in the Decapolis what did to-him the Jesus. And all marveled.
Luke coming-out and the demons from the man they-entered into the pigs. And rushed the herd down the precipice into the lake and was-choked. seeing And those feeding the thing-having-happened fled. And leaving reported to the city and to the farms. they went out And to-see that happening and came to the Jesus and found sitting the man from whom the demons had-gone-out clothed and of-sound-mind at the feet of Jesus. And they-were-afraid. related And to-them also those having-seen how was-healed he having-been-demon-possessed. And asked him all the multitude of the neighborhood of Gadarenes to-depart from them for with fear great they-were-seized; He and entering into the boat returned. begged And him the man from whom had-gone-out the demons to-be with him. dismissed But him the Jesus saying Return to the house of you and relate what did to-you God. And he-went-away through all the city proclaiming what did to him the Jesus.

Nothing to be added here to the above.
