The New Testament
Querying the QM Thesis

Redaction Action

J. P. Holding

Argument Summary: Matthew often adds redcactional commentary Mark lacks. This is a sign that he is adding to a Markan text. [Stein, 84ff]

The most common material cited in this respect:

  • Matthew's more common use of the "Son of David" title
  • Matthew's addition of material saying "This was to fulfill..."

Even on the surface this does not by itself argue for Marcan priority over Matt, but priority of something else over Matt. Whether that is Mark or a common oral core of tradition is not by itself shown by the texts. The fulfillment material especially makes sense as an educated student like Matthew further reflected upon the events of Jesus' life and discovered more fulfillments.
