And going-up the Jesus into Jerusalem he-took-along the twelve disciples in-way privately in the way and said to-them Behold! We-are-going-up to Jerusalem and the Son of Man will-be-delivered-up to chief-priests and scribes and they-will-condemn him to-death and they-will-deliver-up him to nations in-order-to mock and scourge and crucify And the third day he-will-rise-again. |
| Mark |
they-were And in the way going-up into Jerusalem And was going-before then the Jesus. And they-were-amazed and following were-afraid. And taking again the twelve he-began to-tell the things about to-him to-happen for Behold! We-are-going-up to Jerusalem and the Son of Man will-be-delivered-up to chief-priests and the scribes and they-will-condemn him to-death and they-will-deliver-up him to nations. And they-will mock him and will-scourge him and will-spit-at him and will kill-him and on the third day he-will-rise-again. |
| Luke |
having-taken-aside And the twelve he said to-them Behold! We-are-going-up to Jerusalem and will-be-fulfilled all having-been-written through prophets to the Son of Man. He will-be-delivered-up For to the nations, and will-be-mocked and will-be-insulted and will-be-spat-upon and having-flogged they-will-kill him and on day the third he-will-rise-again. And they none these understood and was the saying this having-been-hidden from them and not they-knew the being-said. |
Mark's pattern of repetition is a clear memory device though whether originated by Peter, Mark or Jesus is of no moment. Mark does as usual add eyewitness reactions (being amazed) and Luke again shows clear signs of note-taking rather than direct copying.
| Matthew |
Then came-near to-him the mother of sons Zebedee with the sons of-her worshipping and asking some from him. he And said to-her What desire you? Says to-him Say that may-sit (2523) these the two sons of-me one off the right of-you and one off the left in the kingdom of-you. answering And the Jesus said Not you-know what you-ask Are-you-able to-drink the cup which I-am about to-drink and the baptism which I am-baptized to-be-baptized? They-say to-him we-are-able. And he-says to-them the indeed cup of-me you-will-drink and the baptism which I am-baptized you-will-be-baptized but to sit off right of-me and off left of-me not is mine to-give but for whom-it-was-prepared (2090) by Father of-me |
| Mark |
And came-up to-him James and John the sons Zebedee saying Teacher we-desire that what ever we-may-ask you-would-do for-is. he And said to-them What desire to-do me for-you? they And said to-him Give-us that one off the right of-you and one off the left of-you we-may-sit in the glory of-you. the And Jesus said to-them Not you-know what you-ask Are-you-able to-drink the cup which I drink and the baptism which I am-baptized to-be-baptized? they And say to-him we-are-able. the And Jesus said to-them the indeed cup which I drink you-will drink and the baptism which I am-baptized you-will-be-baptized but to sit off right of-me and off left of-me not is mine to-give but for whom-it-was-prepared. |

A worthy note is that this episode presupposes the prior teaching in Matthew in which the twelve are told they will judge the 12 tribes on thrones. Mark and Luke do not have this teaching, which tells us again that there are many examples of selection of material.
Marcan prioritists once again imagine that Matt is trying to avoid Mark's dissing of the disciples by putting the Zeb brothers' mom at the fore. This is an absurdity, for the sons are clearly with their mother at the time, and it demands naivete to suppose that they were along not having any idea what was up. Indeed Matthew makes them look worse for using her, since the request of an elderly woman would be less apt to be denied! The brothers Zebedee come off as obnoxious in Mark, but they come off as obnoxious users in Matthew, which is worse!
Stein [82] also thinks there is a clue for Marcan priority in that in Matt. 20:22, Jesus' answer is in the plural. This as above misses that the sons are clearly said to be WITH her, and could hardly be dumb-ignorant of what she was about to ask (and likely put her up to it) so that we are to note that Jesus is talking to all three -- a "plurality" that warrants the plural.
| Matthew |
And having-heard the ten were-indignant about the two brothers the But Jesus having-called-near them said You-know that the rulers of nations exercise-lordship-over them and the great-ones exercise-authority-over them. not so But it will-be among you but who ever desires among you great to-become will-be of-you servant. even-as the Son of Man not did-come to-be-served but to-serve and to-give the life of-him ransom instead-of many. |
| Mark |
And having-heard the ten began to-be-indignant about James and John. the But Jesus having-called-near them says to-them You-know that those seeming to rule the nations exercise-lordship-over them and the great-ones exercise-authority-over them. not so But it will-be among you but who ever desires to-become great among you will-be servant of-you. even For the Son of Man not did-come to-be-served but to-serve and to-give the life of-him ransom instead-of many. |

If we are going to engage in psychoanalysis of the text, why not say Peter names James and John to impute more guilt to them, which Matt's depersonalized "two brothers" does less easily? The more prosaic explanation for this -- and the reversal of order of some phrases -- is that we have a common oral tradition.
| Matthew |
And going-out they from Jericho followed him crowd great (4183) and behold two blind sitting beside the roadway hearing that Jesus is-passing-by cried-out saying Have-pity on-us Lord son David. the But crowd rebuked them that they-be-silent they But more cried-out saying Have-pity on-us Lord son David And stopping the Jesus called them and said What you-desire I-may-do to-you? They-say to-him Lord that may-be-opened (455) of-us the eyes. being-moved-with-pity And the Jesus touched the eyes of-them and instantly saw-again of-them the eyes and they-followed him. |
| Mark |
And they-come into Jericho And having-gone-out he from Jericho and the disciples of-him and crowd considerable (2425) son of Timeaus Bartimeaus the blind sat by the roadway begging. And hearing that Jesus the Nazarene it-is he-began to cry-out and to-say the Son of David Jesus pity me. And warned him many that he-be-quiet he But much more cried-out son David pity me. And standing the Jesus said for-him to-be-called And they-call the blind saying to-him Be-comforted Rise-up he-calls you. he And casting-away the garment of-him rising-up came to the Jesus. answering says to-him Jesus What you-desire I-do for-you? the And blind said to-him My-Lord that I-may-see-again (308). the And Jesus said to-him Go! the faith of-you has-healed you. And instantly he-saw-again and followed the Jesus in the way. |
| Luke |
it-happened And in the to draw-near him to Jericho blind certain was-sitting sat by the roadway begging. And the Jesus said to-him See again! the faith of-you has-healed you. And instantly he-saw-again and followed him glorifying God and all the people having-seen gave praise to God. |
Matt's second blind man is likely, as elsewhere, a man shifted from another such healing. Mark as usual adds many details of an eyewitness; and is it likely that if Luke had Mark as-is before him, he would omit the name of Bartimeaus? This is rather a sign that he used as a main source, apart from Mark, Ur-Matthew.
