Sectional Analysis
| Matthew |
And it-happened when finished the Jesus giving-command to twelve disciples of-him he-moved from there to teach and proclaim in the cities of-them. But the John hearing in the-prison the works of Christ sending two of disciples of-him said to-him You are the coming or another should-we-look-for? And answering the Jesus said to-them Going relate John what you-hear and see blind-ones receive-sight and lame-ones walk about lepers are-cleansed and deaf-ones hear dead-ones are-raised and poor-ones are given-the-gospel and blessed is who ever not is-stumbled in me. |
| Luke |
And reported to-John the disciples of-him about all these. And having-called-near two certain of disciples of-him the John sent to the Jesus saying you Are he coming or another should-we-look-for? in same And hour he-healed many from diseases and plagues and spirits evil and blind-ones to-many he-freely-gave to-see. And answering the Jesus said to-them Going relate John what you-saw and heard for blind-ones seeing-again lame-ones walking-about lepers are-being-cleansed deaf-ones hearing dead-ones are-raised, poor-ones are-being-given-the-gospel and blessed is who ever not is-stumbled in Me. |
The words of Luke are what we would expect from note-taking from either a Q or an Ur-Matthew. Luke has only added an explanatory note. Neither theory takes this as support.
| Matthew |
these But were-going began the Jesus to-say to crowds concerning John What did-you-go-out to the deserted to-behold Reed by wind being-shaken? But what went-you-out to-see? Man in soft garments having-been-clothed? Behold those the soft wearing in the houses of kings are But what did-you-go-out to-see, prophet? Yes, I-say to-you even more-excellent prophet. this For is about whom it-has-been-written (Mal. 3:1). |
| Luke |
going-away And messengers John he-began to speak to the crowds concerning John. What did-you-go-out to the deserted to-behold? Reed by wind being-shaken? But what went-you-out to-see? Man in soft garments having-been-clothed? Behold those in clothing splendid and in-luxury being in kings palaces are But what did-you-go-out to-see, prophet? Yes, I-say to-you even more-than prophet. this For is about whom it-has-been-written (Mal. 3:1). |
Again the variations are minor, though notably the introduction is substantially different. This may suggest that Ur-Matthew lacked this introduction, or else may reflect note-taking.
| Matthew |
Truly I-say to-you not has-arisen in born-of woman greater John the Baptist the But lesser in the kingdom of heaven greater he is. from And the days John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven taken-by-force and violent seize it all For prophets and the law until John prophesied and if you-are-willing to-receive he is Elijah he about to-come. He having ears to-hear let-him-hear. |
| Luke |
I-say for to-you greater among born-of woman prophet John the Baptist no one is. the But least in the kingdom of God greater he is. And all the people hearing also the tax-collectors justified the God having-been-baptized the baptism John the But Pharisees and the lawyers the counsel of-God set-aside for themselves not have-been-baptized by him. |
Here Luke has either substituted a difficult saying of Jesus (perhaps because of its political overtones) for a commentary, or else Matthew has put extensive this comments in with the rest topically, and Luke preserves an Ur-Matthew comment, or adds his own. The first is more likely since Matthew has implied that the Pharisees at least came to be baptized, whereas Luke had generalized that comment.

to what But shall-I compare the generation this? like it-is little-children in markets sitting and calling to mates of-them and saying We-piped to-you and not you-did-dance we mourned to-you and not you-did-wail. came For John neither eating nor drinking and they-say Demon he-has. Came the Son of Man eating and drinking and they-say Behold man gluttonous and wine-drinker tax-collectors friend and sinners. And was-justified the Wisdom by the children of-her. |
| Luke |
to what then shall-I compare the men the generation of-this? like they children in market sitting and calling to-one-another and saying We-piped to-you and not you-did-dance we mourned to-you and not you-wept. has come For John the Baptist neither bread eating nor wine drinking and you-say Demon he-has. has-come the Son of Man eating and drinking and you-say Behold man gluttonous and wine-drinker tax-collectors friend and sinners. And was-justified the Wisdom by the children of-her all. |
The differences here are minor. Matt for example has "markets" in plural while Luke has it in the singular. The difference between "mates of them" and "one another," and Matt's use of "wail" versus Luke's "wept" is what we would expect from either note-taking or independent translations from the same original language, but not from direct copying.
