Under a patronage model, a patron might well demand anything in return for favor. Melinda's trepidation is understandable in light of how Weiland Von Lucre abused her under his own patronage (as can be gathered implicitly from the events depicted in Shrike Team #1), even though she knows from Brom's reputation that he would not be abusive or overly demanding as a patron. In fact, Brom's own "demands" parallel how patronage would ideally operate under Christian principles (or on Hearthstone, the principles of the Covenant): He doesn't make any real "demands" for himself (though Melinda's loyalty would be both valued and appreciated) and expects no recompense, knowing that he serves the One who is his own patron in the grand picture.
