Index: Ephesians, Philippians

These are "needs-based" epistles (personal letters) to a particular church. For the authorship of Ephesians, see here. The authorship of Philippians is not seriously questioned. However, it's unity sometimes is.

Ephesians 2:8-9
Response to Mormonism, with reference to Romans 8:24-5 Also: Is this incorrect, since the "act of accepting by faith is a work itself"? No -- acts of the will and mind were NOT considered "works" in this time. The Greek word indicates physical labor or toil.
Ephesians 3:3
Was Paul a Gnostic?
Ephesians 4:8-10
Did Jesus descend into hell?
Ephesians 4:26
Is the Bible contradictory about being angry?
Ephesians 6:5
Do we call men "master" or not?
Ephesians 6:6
Do we please men, or not?
Ephesians 6:9
Does God play favorites or not?
Philippians 1:10
Did Paul expect Jesus to return soon?
Philippians 1:18
In every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Jesus is proclaimed, and in that I rejoice. A Jewish anti-missionary site saw some alleged significance here thinking that they could prove Paul a liar, but the word "pretence" here is prophasis, which means an outward showing. It does not reflect lies in content, but lies in motive, and that is what Paul accuses opponents of his of doing, not himself -- just as you may get a true Gospel message unwitingly from a charlatan. Is eternal life not more of a concern than the bad habits of the preacher?
Philippians 1:222
Was Paul suicidal?
Philippians 2:12
Does this verse teach "salvation by works"? -- part of a broad article that also touches on the general faith-works relationship question. Links at the end explain how various other Bible-oriented/Christian groups misunderstand the doctrine.
Philippians 3:2
If Paul thinks circumcision is a "mutilation," how could Jesus have been the perfect, unblemished sacrifice?
Philippians 3:3
Was Paul a Gnostic?
Philippians 4:5
Did Paul expect Jesus to return soon?
Philippians 4:9
A God of war, or peace?
